Do You Look Older Than You Feel?

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Ask yourself these questions:

Do you feel like your face makes you look older than you feel?

Do you feel like you are starting to look like your grandparents?

Choosing to under go an elective surgery is a big decision, especially when it comes to your face. If you find yourself looking in the mirror wondering “who is this tired person looking back at me?” then it might be time to consider what options are available to you. While we are all individuals with many factors that will affect our aging process, time and gravity are predictable forces.

As you age most people start to lose structural support in their face. The quality of your skin declines, and we lose fat and volume in our faces. Your skin starts to sag, your cheeks fall and the skin under your neck stretches out. You might already have fine lines and wrinkles and the surface looks older, disclored or blotchy. These are all a part of the natural aging process.

Depending on how much your face bothers you, or where you are at in your life, there are several options or treatments available. The only way to know what is right for you is to meet with a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, and get the recommendations that pertain to your own unique situation.

Here are some common approaches to dealing with the face:

A Facelift: There are variations of a facelift, but the standard facelift addresses the changes from aging that occur from the eyes down to the base of the neck. The incisions for a standard facelift vary from surgeon to surgeon an from patient to patient. You can expect an incision that will begin 2-4 inches about the ear and then curve around the front of the ear, into the crease behind the ear, and into the hairline.

These scars tend to heal very nicely, and if they are placed well, hardly noticeable long term. A Facelift does require more time off of work than less invasive options, but this procedure can produce significant results for many men and women.

A Browlift: If you feel you look tired or angry, a sagging forehead (brow) may be the cause. If your forehead is sagging down it can cause your eyebrows to become too low and and this can also contribute to your upper eye lids sagging as well. A brow lift raises the forehead skin to a more normal position. This procedure is often combined with a Blepharoplasty, or eye surgery.

A blepharoplasty is the surgical treatment of excess, sagging, and/or bulging skin around your eyes. The upper and lower eyelids can be done together, or separate, depending on your situation and combined with other facial surgeries if appropriate.

Peeling and Resurfacing options: Facial chemical peels and resurfacing procedures are designed to make the skin look younger, smoother, even out pigmentation and restore tightness. A standard expectation is that the level of correction needed is related to the level of the depth of the skin damage, the more damage, the more extensive correction needed. Regardless of what method of peel or resurfacing is used, it is important to protect your skin before and after treatment.

Chemical peels are often combined with other non-surgical facial treatments to address a variety of concerns. Peels can be combined with dermal fillers (Restylane or Radiesse), Botox, or Dysport, and skin care products such as OBAJI.

Dermal Injectables/Fillers: Sometimes the most visible signs of aging are the lines around your mouth, wrinkles around your eyes or frown lines between your eyes. There are materials that can be injected into, or under the skin, to reduce or elminate those wrinkles or depressions, those are called dermal fillers.

Dermal fillers fill in, add bulk and restore fullness to the face.  If you are bothered by the creases that have resulted from smiling, frowning, laughing, squinting or just the aging process, then dermal fillers might be right for you.

All cosmetic surgeries, even non-surgical ones, have limitations and can’t fix everything. You must have realistic expectations of what you are choosing to do and understand the procedure or treatment that you are receiving. There is often immediate and prolonged recovery and downtime, and that is for both men and women.

The first step in finding out what options are available to you start with a phone call to the office, and a consultation with Dr. Dehghan. Based on his exam, you will receive his professional recommendations and a quote based on options he presents to you.

What Is The Difference Between A Tummy Tuck and Liposuction?

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Many women, and men, seek out cosmetic surgery to not only to increase their confidence in how their bodies look, but to also have the freedom to fit into the clothes they wish to wear.

While both of these procedures are designed to improve the body contour, they each address a specific issue. For many people, it is possible to do both a Tummy Tuck and Liposuction (of other areas) at the same time to give patients a more significant change in their over all body contour. The only way to know for sure what is right for you, is to get the opinion of one of our Board-Certified Plastic Surgeons.

Liposuction (or Lipoplasty) is a procedure in which your surgeon sculpts your body by removing unwanted fat deposits in specific areas by the use of a cannula. Liposuction treats the subcutaneous fatty tissue which is above the muscle and below the skin, and it does not address stretched or loose skin. The location of your fat cells dictates your shape, as well as genetics and gender. Areas such as the “love handles” or “saddle bags” are regions that typically have fat fullness that just won’t go away regardless of what a patient does, there are even thin people who can have extra fat in these areas.  Liposuction works best on the areas that do not respond to diet and exercise.

A Tummy Tuck (or Abdominoplasty) is used to treat excess abdominal skin, a saggy tummy, or the buldging of your abdomen. A Tummy Tuck is an excellent operation for women (or men) who have loose skin above and below the belly button that does not go away.

There are different types of Tummy Tucks, and in general a Tummy Tuck contours your abdomen by reparing the muscle wall by bringing it back together, and removing the loose, stretched skin. Your abdominal muscles can become lax through pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or inactivity to the point where they will no longer contract. The incisions for this procedure can be significant, but they do hide in most styles of underwear and bathing suits. If your skin laxity and muscle weakness problems are limited to the area below the belly button, you may be a good candidate for a mini or lower Tummy Tuck. This is a smaller operation than a standard tummy tuck, with a shorter scar and your belly button is not moved.

Without an evaluation by a plastic surgeon it can be hard to decide which procedure might be right for you. If you have ever felt embarassed by your body, or frustrated that you can’t fit into your clothes the way you would like, then now is the time to take advantage of our complimentary consultations and get the opinion of an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon.

Facts About Silicone Gel-Filled Breast Implants

Friday, April 16th, 2010

When you are considering Breast Augmentation, you are faced with two choices for which type of implant you can have, Saline or Silicone.

For many years, both types of implants have been used to enlarge the breasts of millions of women, but throughout time, Silicone gel-filled implants have been subject to not only unfavorable media attention, but subject to thorough and detailed testing by the FDA.

In 1992, the FDA called for Silicone gel-filled implants to be removed from the marketplace to undergo one of the largest studies conducted in the world. After 13 years of being off the market, the FDA then approved them in 2006 for the use of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. The silicone gel implants that were approved by the FDA in 2006 contain the same silicone breast implant material as those that, prior to this approval, were available to patients who participated in this study.

Here are some facts about Silicone:

  • Silicone can be found in many common consumer items
such as chewing gum, nail polish, lotions, soaps and processed foods.

  • Silicone implants are SAFE.
The national Cancer institue declares that there is no significant increase in breast cancer among women with silicone gel-filled implants.

  • Silicone has been used in hundreds of thousands of medical devices for over 50 years.
The same shell is used for saline or silicone gel-filled implants, it is what is inside that is different.

  • There is “No evidence for health concerns”
as stated by the Department of Health, and U.S. Government.

  • Silicone gel-filled implants feel more like your own breast tissue
without compromising safety and reliability. The gel filler holds together uniformly and looks and feels like natural breast tissue.

  • The implants have a set fill volume
    for predictable results.

  • Mentor’s Silicone gel-filled implants also have warranties
that are comparible to that of the Saline filled implants.

The best way to find out what implant is right for you, is to have a consultation and get the opinion of one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. How a woman feels about her body has a lot to do with her over all self-confidence.

Many women chose to have Breast Augmentation to increase their confidence, look better in clothes and gain the breast size that they feel is right for them.
